Chinese Medicine History

Moxibustion is a Traditional Asian Medicine therapy which consists of burning dried mugwort (moxa) on particular points of the body. Mugwort is a common name of several species of aromatic plants in the genus Artemisia, and are used medicinally especially in Asian traditional medicine. Some mugworts have also been found a use in modern medicine for their anti-herpetic effect. They are also used as a herb to flavour food. In Korea, mugworts were also used for pain, non-medicinal consumption. In South Korea, mugworts are still used as a staple ingredient in many dishes including rice cakes and soup.

Acupuncturists use moxa with the aim to warm regions and meridian points wit

h the intention of stimulating circulation through the points and inducing a smoother flow of Blood and Qi.
