TCM takes the occurrence of pain to be due to a disruption in balance; a balance between the principles of Yin and Yang, and between Qi and Blood. Qi and Blood is thought to travel through the body along well-defined pathways called channels or meridians. When there is not enough Qi and Blood or when they are stuck in an area, there is said to be an imbalance between Yin and Yang and that as a result of this imbalance, internal organs are not functioning optimally and illness and pain develop.
Pain in TCM is thought to be due to the non-free flow of Qi and Blood. When Qi and Blood flow freely, there is believed to be no pain. Therefore, TCM considers keeping our Qi and Blood full and moving freely important for optimal health and well-being and especially for being pain free.
The flow of Qi and Blood may become inhibited in any and every area of the body: the internal organs, the muscles, the joints, and the low back.
External factors – sports injuries, post-operative surgeries, work related injuries, motor vehicle accidents, and repetitive movement syndromes.
This type of pain usually comes from trauma to soft tissues, ligaments, tendons and muscles generally the result of falls, blows, sprains/strains, and impacts. Most commonly, people may seek acupuncture for physical pain, particularly shoulder, knee, and back pain.
Internal factors – long term illness, gynecological issues, digestive issues, emotional trauma and stress related issues.
This type of pain is believed to come from a disruption to the normal balance within our bodies and present as a variety of painful symptoms, for example migraine headaches and menstrual cramps.
